Tutorial & Photoshop Template: Recipe Cards

Hey friends of Plucky Momo!!

My name is Emily from, iCreate...with Love, and I'm so excited to share with you a project I worked on for almost all of last year.  Last spring, I decided I wanted to make recipe books for all of my family. They are always asking for recipes from me, and we have a lot of recipes that remind us of our childhood.

(1) a recipe card template
(2) Photo Book designed to hold 4x6" prints
(3) Adobe Photoshop or other photo editing software
You can download Emily Merritt's template HERE.

You can download Emilie Ahern's template HERE.

It's easy as pie...I began by writing down a list of all of the foods that I loved and wanted in a recipe book. And I got to work. It took me the better part of 2010 to finish and in December I think we ate huge meals with lots of recipes because I was trying to get it all done in time!

If you don't feel you are a great photographer and want to finish more quickly, go ahead and a do Google image search for photos of recipes you make.  Try and choose one that looks like how your finished recipe looks.  And you don't need to worry about copy write as long as this is just for your family to enjoy!

I added my photos onto a card with the recipes, printed them out on my home printer (but you may also choose to have 4x6" prints printed at a photo lab) and put them in a simple photo book.

I'm so thankful Emilie let me share my recipe book with you!
Come stop by and see me on my blog sometime! :)
I'd love to have you!

  4. Actually, if you are distributing this to more than just yourself, you should take copyright into mind. As a published writer, using a copyrighted anything without paying is theft. It's much better to put general instructions for how to take good pictures of food (e.g. light, angle, composition).

  5. I totally agree Sally!
That's why I made sure to specify...
"And you don't need to worry about copy write since this is just for your family to enjoy!"

  6. I love this and have been in the process of making my own book... this will be a huge help! Forgive me for possibly sounding completely stupid, but how do you get a photo to fit in the gray area (I use PS 6.0 and have no idea what I'm doing!) If you could email me, I'd really appreciate it!! Stacilee84@gmail.com

    Thanks so much!! :)

  8. I tried to download your recipe card templates... But, when I tried to open them my computer said it didn't have the correct program to open them and use them. Can you please tell me what program I need to get. Or maybe you have a template I can use with Word or something. I would appreciate your help. I love your templates and can't wait to start making a bunch of recipe cards!

    Thanks so much,

  15. For everybody who doesn't have Photoshop (like me!), you can use Pixlr.com. Choose the advanced version. Although the layers will come through, the text layers will not come through as text layers. I got around this by creating a new text layer and matching the position and size with the existing text, then deleting the "broken" text layers. Mine came out really cute.

  17. Hi thanks for the lovely idea. Can you please post the album you used, this looks like a perfect size as I'm looking for an album that's compact.

    Thanks in advance!

  19. Great idea. I love the idea of using photos as cards that are removable. Quick Tip: Make sure you get a photo book that can lay flat. Otherwise it can be a pain to hold in place while cooking.

Also, for pictures. There are a lot of creative commons food photos on flickr.com/creativecommons and that only require attribution and are free to use. Another great free food photo site is https://foodiesfeed.com/

Canva.com is another great tool for editing.

Also, If you want to have your own cookbook professionally made, check us out at CreateMyCookbook. No minimum quantities or anything, and we have a built in book designer made especially for cookbooks.
